What is goth? Why are people goth? How did this trend originate?

When I was in high school, there were a lot of kids wearing all black, dying their hair black, wearing black lipstick, dog collars, chains, etc.

I really thought this trend was passe now, but recently I've seen people still doing it.

What is this all about, why do they like it,etc? Is this a Marilyn Manson thing? Is this a vampire thing? What is the deal?

goth is a life style not a fashion statement, and yes, some goths listen to Marilyn Manson (I do)

and chick above me, goths don't try to be non conformists, people just began to say that about them, and basically put words in all of goth people's mouths, saying "we're all non conformists" which isnt true, i know that im not a non conformist at all i just like to dress that way and so do my friends so f*** off

In high school is the only time that the rest of the world almost lets you express yourself. After that you are a working chump in what we call the "real world" or "reality" it's the same load of crap, reality only exsists for us during our concious lives and therefore it should be our to dress as we please and marry who we please. Social institutions that cripple and limit our freedoms of choice only limit the pleasure we can take in life.

I'm not promoting anarchy or anything, but if a person feels good covered in black, what's really wrong with that?

Goths are saying "eff the conformists" by getting into a group of people who dress like them and talk like them and act like them. They like being dark because they don't have any real turmoil going on in their lives... just boredom. And they want to seem interesting and being a goth can make them seem cool for awhile so why not?
